[Nicholls - 19th - Post 5] showstealer1829 wraps up his campaign talking about farmers and making a final pitch to voters
Post Body

showstealer1829 has been touring farms in Gippsland for the past few days. Today he is back at Korumburra talking to one of the top dairy farmers in the land, walking out to make his final speech

Friends, it's been a long campaign, it's been sometimes tiring and especially as I have travelled around Gippsland and other farming areas, it's been very informative as the farmers have opened their hearts to me and told me just what they have been going through and what they need for the future.

As I've said during this campaign, almost a quarter of the nations dairy products come from farms here in Nicholls, on top of farms in the Mallee providing the food needs of a nation, we are truly the nations foodbowl. Which is why it is such a frustrating disappointment to see how our farmers are treated by the major parties that have abandoned them.

The previous government are the prime example of this, didn't do anything for them in office, didn't even mention them in their manifesto. obviously could not care less about them. Where is anything for the farmers? The battlers of the bush?

In my time talking to the farmers, especially here in Gippsland on the dairy farms, one thing has come through repeatedly loud and clear. We need a fundamental overhaul of farm subsidies and incentives. Our nation's farmers are drowning in debt with the rising cost of feed, the rising cost of equipment, the cost of keeping farms and farm equipment maintained to the standard that our nation expects. We have some of the most stringent bio-security in the country and we should be proud of that, given some of the huge holes in food security in places like the UK, but to hold our farmers to that standard, to constantly tightly the rules and not help them in the slightest with the costs of doing that is driving many families to the wall.

If we as a nation continue to do nothing for our farmers our bio-security, our food situation will start to suffer as farmers who have been on the land for generations will have no choice but to walk away. That is why we need a new commission to oversee these things, to recommend changes in subsidys, to do what we have always done, give our farmers a fair go.

This election tomorrow will be a chance to send a message through to the major parties, that we want to support our farmers, that we want better mental health in the bush, that we need more public housing, that the advances in GP rates we have made can not be squandered. That the battlers of the bush are sick and tired of being ignored. Tomorrow once again we go to the polls with a clear message and a clear hope. Together we can make a difference, because local problems need local solutions, only by working together can we send that message. That message of hope, that message of determination, that message of anger. We stand together.
