Can a company I've applied to share my details with my current employer?

Australian Lawyers Of Reddit,

I've run into a bit of trouble at work. I've recently applied for a new job at a company that subcontracts my current employer to do work for them, the contracting company was offering a role that was too good to be true so I decided to go through the pre-employment process with them.

I completed all the obligatory pre-employment mumbo jumbo but then heard nothing but radio silence for weeks.

I made enquiries as to when I would begin work only to be told they'd contact me with a contract soon.

I heard back from them earlier this week only to be told that they suddenly went into a hiring 'Freeze' and my services would no longer be required.

Then I was contacted by my employer about allegations that I had applied for a role there, and was told that the company I applied to was told to reach out whenever an employee of my current employer applied or enquired about a job with them and they had final say on who was allowed to jump ship.

I'm unsure of what to do now, I'm certain this breaks NSW Privacy Law and maybe even Discrimination law, any advice?
