Creating outdoor reverberation

So I’ve seen posts on the internet in the past but can’t find them and remember comments talking about slap backs over actual reverbs for outdoor settings, particularly natural surroundings. How do you create this space? I’ve been using IR-L with outside ambience IRs but I find that I can only use a minimal send or the effect becomes too obvious.
Also do you side chain your verbs from your Dx bus to help with intelligibility?
