Post Body

The counterinsurgency started by Prime Minister Azurdia was stated to drive the insurgents from the eastern departments, and bring the central government back into control in the area. Many questioned if the efforts of the PM would be enough to accomplish his goals, however it would seem God was truly on the Prime Minister's side this day. The main assault of the campaign, helped in it's planning by American advisors, was a two pronged assault, one seeking to cleanse the department of Izabal, the other to free the department of Zacapa. During the liberation of Izabal, the Guatemalan Army was devastating in it's efficiency, taking the rebels by complete surprise and all but eradicating the FAR presence in the region. The Guatemalan Air Force proved to be a key factor in the liberation, providing devastating air superiority and harrassing fleeing FAR soldiers.

In the liberation of Zacapa, the Army found less success, having heard of the devastation of Izabal many of the FAR bases had hastily erected defenses, however this simply made them more obvious targets for the Guatemalan Air Force. Many of the FAR soldiers, simply chose to flee into the surrounding countryside. Though the FAR is now less active in the department, it remains unclear if they have simply gone underground, ready to rise up at the slightest hint of weakness, or if they have fled to the neighboring departments.

As for the bombing campaign of the Sierra de las Minas mountains, the Guatemalan Air Force once again proved their efficiency, launching devastating campaigns against the FGEI hiding there. The 2nd and 3rd were able to identify a great number of FGEI bases in the mountains, owing to the number of refugees from the GAF attack runs fleeing to neighboring bases.

For the information extraction, G-2 were not at all hindered in finding guerrilla members to "take into custody", so much so that the men often joked that they might well single-handedly bring down the insurgency going on. However it would seem the G-2 had gone down a more Quantity than Quality path, as many of the members they had taken were either new, or low ranking comparatively. Much of the information provided was either outdated, missing important pieces, or just flat out wrong.
