In the wake of renewed Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese aggression in Laos, the Hmong guerillas have been playing a key role in slowing the communist advance. Australia recognizes that the Hmong can, unlike the Royal Lao Army, fight a less conventional war which could play a critical role in winning the Civil War. As such, the Australian Ministry of Defence, as well as the cabinet, has approved a top secret program that provides weapons to the Hmong guerrillas. Additionally, ten members of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) will be sent to help train the Hmong in their new weaponry. Australia will send 350 L1A1 rifles, 100 MAG 58 machine guns and 20 ML 3-inch mortars. These will be secretly be flown into Vientiane as humanitarian aid and then quickly taken out to a local Hmong stronghold. The SAS advisors will also report back after 3 months as to the effectiveness of these weapons in the hands of the Hmong. It is hoped these weapons will help stop the communist tide in Southeast Asia.
