The middle East represents a major strategic area, in which US interests must be protected. Currently the UK established Alliance "CENTO" remains our best means of doing so, although the withdrawal of Iraq in 1959 has weakened the alliance somewhat. However the remaining members still remain a significant force. The US would like to approach Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and the United Kingdom with the proposal for a conference in a city of their choosing within CENTO, to discuss the following;
Regional security
Potential US commitments to ensure regional security
Collective defense against Soviet aggression.
Efforts to combat Arab Socialism rising in the region.
