In the first election of an independent Vietnam, the vote for the Second National Assembly was held by the Standing Committee. With an 81% voter turnout, it was an exceptional display of Vietnamese democratic ideals as envisioned by President Ho Chi Minh. The Fatherland Front comprising of the Indochina Worker’s Party (formerly the Viet Minh core) and the Democratic Party of Vietnam gains a majority, with the Nationalist Party leading the Opposition alongside the United Liberty Coalition. The Social Party remains in schism with the rest of the Vietnamese far left.
