"We focus on our land - freedom of thought and labor. Come to our land for bread and a new life will soon follow." -Antônio Marques
Lourenço Marques, February 22nd of 1946.
A new school of thought is coming to Mozambique. Ethnical Portuguese born in Mozambique are developing poems, songs, paintings and pictures to evoke new feelings and theories. The movement, known as "Mozambican Romanticism, seeks to promote a sense of belonging and freedom to the East African colony. The movement encourages Portuguese to move to Mozambique to develop a new life, free to establish small businesses and farms, forgetting their past lives and forging a new one. To ethnic Portuguese in Mozambique, the movement encourages autarky, active political participation and democratic thought.
Creators and thinkers include Augusto Brasa, poet and craftsman; José Campos Rocha, a painter dedicated to pictures that focus on nature, daube and architecture. Other figures include Pedro Cervantes Filho, Carlos Monteiro and Cristóvão Abreu, all are dedicated to Mozambican Romanticism and have been drawn to this movement after having served in WW2, bringing with them hopes of a new, European colony based on freedom and democracy.
Week of Mozambican Art
The authors of the movement have been petitioning the governor-general of Mozambique, asking for sponsorship and permission to begin the Week of Mozambican Art in Lourenço Marques. The entry would be free to ethnical Portuguese and the elite, thought it has been reported that few Mozambicans are also interested in participating, if anything to at least criticize the movement as "Not representative of the actual population".
