Pre and post workout nutrition

I was initially not very concerned with figuring out ways to maximize my performance at the gym but I've learned since that certain practices and foods that I was consuming before and after have been having a massive effect on both my workouts and recovery.

So question to the veterans here: Please tell me what you consume before going to the gym and how long before the workout do you take it? Will really prefer if there's an alternative to supplements cause it's super expensive where I am.

Similarly for the post workout muscle growth maximisation please let me know what to do.
