So I have a 6 yr old. Since Covid started in 2020, she was staying with her grandma in the house pretty much in a bubble for a year and a half, and around no kids besides the few at her Church. Anyway, so she started school in august, and made it through the first week fine, but then the next week she had these coughing episodes at night where she’d throw up from coughing so much, sometimes run a fever and sometimes not. Sometimes a runny nose but usually the whole thing starts out as stuffy. Happened every month nearly like clockwork until I seen a diff doctor in her office. She’s now on flovent 2 puffs 2x a day as well as flonase once a day (1 spray in each nostril) she’d been on antibiotics every month nearly, and in December I had enough and wanted answers. So she had a chest X-ray, bloodwork, and something else. No Covid flu or pneumonia Thank God, but her doc and I are baffled as to what causes these episodes. And it comes in the same pattern!! Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you I will! I wasn’t aware she even had asthma until she had these spells… when she was two her doctor said she developed bronchitis from her asthma. She’s been on Zyrtec and singulair since! Now add on Flovent and albuterol (which I rarely ever use or need Thank God). But the other doc she’s seeing now agreed something is triggering it. She goes for a consult to an allergist on the 11th. I’m hoping I get some answers.
Thank you! I wasn’t aware you wait 8 seconds between puffs on the spacer. She uses Flovent 2 puffs twice a day along with flonase now. It seems to be helping. And the antibiotics do clear her up, then it happens the next month! And it happens almost on time each month! Starts out the same exact way too! Gradually comes on. And yes it’ll start to sound croupy at night. She’ll do it during the day too.
That’s when it usually happens about an hr after!
Does anyone know where the rubber seal goes on the inside of the Monaghan z stat spacer?? I think I put it together wrong!!
Thank you so much. I appreciate everyone’s comments and input… and just being here as an outlet and support system for me. It means so much.
Yes! And I’m a hypochondriac at that, so anytime she’s sick, I get extremely nervous. And I’m a single mom so I don’t really have a support system :(
Well she will still cough during the day it doesn’t go away.. it just gets worse and croupy sounding at night and if she does it enough she throws up.
Thank you for your input and I’m so sorry to hear that for your LO! My daughters’ behavior can switch easily and she becomes very frustrated quickly. She’s on 5mg montelukast and 7.5ml Zyrtec and I recently started her on an immunity health probiotic that’s aimed towards upper respiratory health. So far, so good. I hope we get answers soon bc it’s so frustrating for the both of us.
Same tap water… her grandmas though I’m not sure… might be well water
Ok, so you’re saying mold or mildew couldn’t cause this? I plan on mentioning all of this to her Allergist when we go.
Not regularly, no. I should be giving her more than I do; but I hesitate because I’m scared it’ll cause a flare up.
It gets worse at night obviously but it happens during the day as well.
Her grandma is severely allergic to cats, and not sure what else: she said when she was a child, she would throw up nearly everyday from sinus issues. And her cousin has asthma and she used to have get up during the night to do breathing treatments. I don’t have asthma that I’m aware of, her dad don’t… her grandpa tho had COPD, but I think it was from smoking not sure if he actually had asthma.
She had bloodwork done, and everything came back ok.
See it all started one week after she was in school… so I figured it was just her immune system not being used to any germs.. she has never really been around other kids… but the thing is, it’s the same thing every single time.
Not by an allergist no. I had to ask for a referral.
It’ll be mucusy or normal looking like from whatever she ate. Or clear..

Thank you! It’s got to be something she’s coming into contact with.. idk if it’s at school or church or her grandmas, but those are the only places she goes.. and I was never offered a nebulizer. But when these things happen it’s so pitiful. So much chest congestion and constant night coughing and no relief for her. And she doesn’t know how to hack it up so she winds up throwing up. Even cough suppressants don’t help. :( I don’t even know when to use Albuterol bc she’s never had to gasp for breath, Thank God. I worry every night and day that it will start ip again.
