Am I just really unfit? Hi all,
So, I'm 27, male, I weight around 75kgs, and I've been on a 'fitness journey' for the last 3 or 4 years. I'm also asthmatic, but not severely asthmatic (in that I need a regular steroid every morning and evening). I quit smoking 20 a day (ages 18 - 23) back in 2018, and I've not touched a cigarette since.
Essentially, I'm extremely nervous to exercise without taking a puff of my asthma inhaler, and even then, I feel that I'm disproportionately tired relative to the amount of exercise I've performed. Over the last couple of months, I've been following a variant of the 'strong lifts' program, but been doing 3x5 instead of 5x5. I find that towards the end of my session, I'm still feeling winded and out of breath, and I'm still not lifting huge amounts (e.g. chest press is 33 kg, lat pulldown 55kg). Towards the ends of sets, I can also feel a bit lightheaded and dizzy. On the days following my exercises, I feel quite tired and always get way more head rushes from standing and climbing stairs.
When I walk up the stairs in my house, I always feel a little winded, or, as another example, if I were to stand up on the spot and 'jog' for 30 seconds to a minute, I'd feel out of breath for a few minutes afterwards. I tried jogging, but decided to stop that, as I was struggling to get past 10 minutes on the treadmill without feeling overly winded. I've had blood tests, I've had a couple of ECGs, and a chest x-ray, but the doctors couldn't seem to find anything. Am I just really unfit?
How quickly would you guys get winded? Is it normal to be out of breath after doing 30 seconds of jogging on the spot? I would really like to hear from those of you who are more experienced in the world of 'getting fit' and being healthy. Do you NEED to take your inhaler before you exercise? Can you exercise without it?
I'm always worrying there is something more wrong with me than asthma!
Many thanks all x
