I am an Uber/Lyft driver, full time. I recently moved to Florida with my wife, kids, younger brother, and mom and dad to assist in taking care of my mom who began dialysis recently.
We opted for virtual school for the kids due to the pandemic, which has proved to be a full time job in itself. My mom, a former teacher had hoped to help with the schooling, but she's been sicker than anticipated so has been unable to help much. So my wife and I handle a student each. It's actually been a dream of mine to do this, but it has definitely been difficult working full time while teaching as well.
We had all arrived with 2 months of savings and planned to all have jobs and steady income before the two months were up. Month three is coming up and our funds have been exhausted. I am doing my best to pay for all our expenses as the only one with a job so far. Both my brother and dad have finally landed jobs, but start work at the beginning of October.
This has been the most difficult time in our lives, between the stress of not knowing how long my mom has still, running out of food stamps due to a lag in funding between switching from Texas to Florida, and the relentless schooling for the kids. All said and done, I love seeing the kids as much as I do, it has been a fantastic experience and being in a new city has also been a wonderful feeling.
Also, I know Uber drivers can apply for unemployment, but I didn't qualify because I am actually making more than before the pandemic started. My brother and father both applied and were denied because they voluntarily left their former jobs to move to Florida.
Juggling expenses has been manageable up to now, but the culmination of bad luck and unexpectedly long unemployment from my brother and dad has lead to finally being short this week. I expect to be able to have $2000 by Friday, but rent is $2600. Any assistance, no matter how small, would be incredible, as I know the 600 difference is far too much to expect from random, kind-hearted philanthropists.
After this week, I believe this whole ordeal will be in a much more promising position. There will be two new sources of income finally and we should all be stable from here on out.
