Obviously ‘successfully’ in this context means ‘widely supported’ but how can someone like him, who did the things he did, be the best candidate? How are the American people letting this happen? Is it not embarrassing? Maybe I’m just misunderstanding what this whole race is about.
Am I the only one who doesn’t get this? Forgive my naivety.

"Best" doesn't necessarily mean best suited for the job. "Best" in this context means the person that the most people in that party wanted.
How are the American people letting this happen?
That's how our laws are structured.
