How do I discourage this behavior?

My niece’s cat loves pickled jalapeños. I know it can be dangerous for them because they can’t tell if something is spicy until it’s too late and it can make them quite sick, but every chance she gets she goes after jalapeños. I kind of figured the strong smell from it having been pickled would be enough of a deterrent, but it doesn’t seem to work at all.
