Is Liberalism Right-Leaning, Left-Leaning, Or Both? It's confusing me a lot

I really get confused when people talk about Liberalism, one reason is that people put this ideology in a multitude of political spectrums. Like people put neo-liberalism as right wing, but social liberalism as left wing, while true, both carry the word "liberalism" which confuses me and many other people.
