I hate to post a second clarification so quickly, but with the new system emerging, as described here I wanted to take a moment to further explain what you should upvote, downvote and report.
If you look at our guidelines you can see that generally there is one set of rules for top-tier comments (ie, direct answers) and then relaxed rules for replies to those comments.
So, what should you upvote and downvote? The goal of this subreddit is to answer questions with comprehensive, sourced answers, per our guidelines.
If there is a good comment, regardless of whether you agree with it politically, you should upvote it (or at least leave it alone).
Do not downvote someone if you disagree with them. Ever. Honestly, we've debated removing downvotes entirely as "better" responses should float to the top as more people upvote that than other responses.
As for comments to report, I touched on that earlier, lets start with the easy reasons, which are very similiar to what will get your comments removed.
- Racist, sexist, or otherwise bigoted behavior (you know what this is, I'm not going to enumerate)
- Rudeness and hostility beyond what would you might consider reasonable (discussions can be hostile at times, but if they devolve into personal attacks, please report)
- Obvious attempts at trolling (mocking other people, constantly repeating the same comments, etc.)
If you have any doubt, feel free to message the moderators or go ahead and report. Why? A report does not automatically mean it will be deleted. When we review reported comments, we always look at the context if it is not immediately obvious why it should be removed. And if you have any concerns about a comment being removed, feel free to message us again.
Our goal is to achieve great discussions and responses to political questions. With your help we will get there.
