Just a reminder, the guidelines are here but I want to clarify a few things.
Regarding top-level comments:
The answers provided in /r/ask_politics should be informed, comprehensive, serious and courteous
Lets take that sentence and parse it.
- Comprehensive - If you're going to post a top-level comment, please address the question or ask a question requesting additional clarification. Short attempts at humor are not what we are looking for. As it states earlier, sources are not required, but be prepared to provide them. Really, its probably a best practice to quote as you write.
- Serious - very rarely should you make a joke as a top-level comment unless its used as a rhetorical device. Yes, there are people famous in political discussions for using jokes, but most of what we are seeing here is not anywhere close to that vein.
- Courteous - this is key. You can disagree without being disagreeable.
But also on that last point, let me clear up a few questions about the conduct we are aiming for. Anyone who frequents this place knows that things can get a little heated. And that's fine, its the nature of politics and debate. But one the quickest way to get a post deleted is to cross from "heated" into something more. The only thing faster is to use something approaching Carlin's famous "seven dirty words". If you use one of those, unless you are using it a sublimely amazing way, your comment will be deleted.
Also, just as a broad reminder:
If you came here to score political points or to parrot unsourced talking points, your comments will be removed.
Our goal is to create a place where political questions and debates can be discussed in a fair, honest and respectful manner. Please remember this. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask here.
Edit: I'll never understand why people upvote or downvote stickies... it does nothing.
