I'm (30F) a people-pleaser who hates conflict so I'm always trying to avoid arguments, even between other people. I'm also more on the introvert side of the sociable spectrum and was a shy child. While I don't feel shiness anymore, I feel like I can't always stand up for myself or speak my mind (for fear of what people think I guess?) and it makes me feel really sad and bad about myself. I want to be more confident and assertive in my communication.
Do you have any tips? I've been considering therapy to also understand the root of my issues...
This might sound silly...but try taking an improv class. First off, they're fun, and teach you how to think on your feet and react more quickly.
I was always kind of an introvert but when my career required me to speak and teach and travel, I found that trying a bit of acting/improv was a huge help. And comedy/being funny helps take those awkward tense situations down a few levels.
