Tldr; my mom has zero friends and I want to fix it, but I donât particularly enjoy being around her.
When I became conscious of this (around 10 years ago) I would try and encourage her to join groups, classes, etc but she always said she is too busy.
Now my brother (17m) is grown and I am out of the house, but she does not do too much. She works as a substitute teacher, but the only people she talks to is my dad, me, brother, and her siblings via text sometimes. (She has 4 older siblings and they all live out of state)
I understand you cannot push someone to do something they donât want to, but I know she is lonely. I know she would benefit from having ladies nights out, and would love it. I just donât know what to do to have her meet people her own age and get a friend group going. I have tried to encourage her now to join groups/hobbies but she always says âyeah I shouldâ and thatâs it.
Before everyone suggests I go out and do things with her, I willâŚâŚ but I do not particularly like my mom. We are very different people, and I do not agree with a lot of her viewpoints and beliefs. I am very independent and open minded, she is very dependent and âsuburbanizedâ. Meaning she says / believes racist, sexist, etc comments every time I see her. And she thinks I am wrong / a brat when I call her out on this. This isnât all of my issue but I am trying to surmise why I donât particularly enjoy being around her, especially nights out with drinking involved.
Her older siblings and my father have admitted to me that she has always been reliant and dependent on other people her whole life. My family does not do well financially, so occasionally she reaches out to her older sister when she needs money, and sister provides.
Based on this, does anyone have any advice to get her into a better social life? Or any groups I can post this to where it might be more relevant? Thank you in advance, please be kind.
