Despite the contradiction, in what ways have you seen sexism againts women help the cause of women's equality?

I just had a funny discussion with a co-worker recently where he expressed a viewpoint that fundamentally is sexist, but in practice had motivated him to fight for womens equality.
His viewpoint was at its core that women need special protection and aren't able to fend for themselves, though it was cloaked in a more egalitarian view. It was really funny once i thought about it and motivated me to ask this question.
