11 year old Pomeranian fly-biting
Post Body

Hi all,

I have a male (neutered at age of 5) Pomeranian who’s about 11 years old (I got him from a rescue 5 years ago and have no history before that).

He has luxating patella and developed pancreatitis in the last 6 months. Both are well managed with a low (<10%) fat diet (kibble recommended by our vet). His weight is within the healthy range for a pom of his size (~6kg), ribs are easy to poke but they aren’t sticking out of his sides.

Otherwise he’s generally healthy. He’s a bit trigger happy with noises but is generally chill, eats, drinks and sleeps well. He isn’t lethargic just less bouncy than he was when I first adopted him.

Over the last 72 hours he’s regularly started fly-biting. He loves and hates to chase flies so I didn’t really notice it being out of character until a few days ago. I’ve noticed it’s become a bit of a habit and I can’t see any flies.

From my reading it could be an eye issue, neurological or gastro related.

So far this is my approach to figuring it out;

  • documenting when it happens and trying to spot a pattern

  • cleaning his eyes (gently) in case there’s debris

  • deep cleaning my apartment to rule out excess dust particles

Beyond this I’m not too sure what else I can be doing to identify where this is coming from. Does anyone have any suggestions or other symptoms I should be watching out for?
