Hi, my vet prescribed my dog Prozac to deal with separation anxiety about a week ago. She has now been on the med for 8 days. I give it to her with food each morning. She is 49lbs and on 40mg. While her separation anxiety has improved, her overall demeanor and personality has changed severely. She honestly seems depressed. She has little to no interest in playing, running outside, going on walks or chewing her toys and sleeps almost 20 hours a day. She is essentially a shell of herself now and it's breaking my heart. She also has a decreased appetite and is refusing kibble that she has loved for over a year as well as many of her favorite treats. She does eat some but not as much, drinks water like normal and her bathroom habits have not changed.
I brought her to the vet to rule out any illness that could be causing the behavior changes and he tried to tell me it was a good thing that she's so much more "relaxed" now, and that this drastic change is the "trade off" for fixing the separation anxiety.
I have no idea what to do at this point and am afraid that she is suffering. I've tried everything for separation anxiety (1:1 training, advice from a number of books, CBD, thunder jackets, crate training, busy toys, etc.) and nothing has helped besides this med, but only because she is essentially out cold the entire time I'm gone and probably doesn't even realize I left.
My question: Is this reaction something normal? Will her energy levels even out eventually? (everywhere I've read says that it should be taking 3-4 weeks to work, but I saw this behavior appear within 3 days). Should we quit the med entirely? If this is something permanent I deeply believe she should not be on this medication. At this point, these meds seem to be detrimentally affecting her quality of life more than the separation anxiety does. Would love some insight, thanks.
EDIT: They also weighed her at the vet today and she has lost 2 pounds in 8 days.
