Alternatives to Prescription food for urinary issues?
Post Body

I have an 8 year old pug who has been on Royal Canin Urinary SO for the past couple of years. Initially he had a UTI, our winters can be harsh, so I suspect he wasn’t eliminating outside which I think caused it. He is super picky about snow and even rain/wet grass. After about 6 months on the prescription food I asked my vet about switching back to normal food because he just doesn’t like eating it and I think he has some allergies with it, prior he was on grain free. The vet gave us the okay to switch, but after some time he got another UTI so he has been on it ever since.

He really doesn’t seem to like the food and some days he doesn’t eat at all. When he does eat eventually he will just stare at the bowl for a while before eating. I used to have to play with his food to get him to eat, but I’ve stopped as to not develop a bad habit. I expressed my concerns to the vet and he basically just told me he will eat when he’s hungry enough.

We have recently took in a 9 month old foster puppy (another pug). What is happening is she is eating the prescription food and he is eating the puppy food (with no hesitation, or sad, depressing stares). I’ve been working on training the puppy to eat her own food with some success, but sometimes they still eat each other’s foods if I’m not paying attention.

I’m worried about the puppy eating the prescription food and I would really just like to feed my dog food he wants to eat. Currently the puppy is eating Blue Basics limited. Are there any alternatives to prescription food for urinary health?
