Species: Cat Age: 2 Sex: Neutered Male Breed: DSH Body weight: 10 lbs. History: One urinary blockage, cleared 11/18 Clinical signs: Constantly dripping urine Duration: 5 days Location: TX
My cat went to the emergency vet on 11/17 for his first urinary blockage. The week before, on 11/11, I took him to his regular vet because I could tell he was straining to pee at that point. They prescribed Prazosin, which he took daily until the blockage. Fast forward to 11/20, he is discharged and comes home with more Prazosin, and the dosage is twice what he was getting the previous week. I have noticed since bringing him home that while he does urinate in the litter box in small amounts, he is constantly dripping urine, when he walks, sits, and lays down. He doesn’t howl or strain to pee in the litter box anymore. I called his regular vet yesterday to see if this incontinence is something to expect, and she said it’s likely a combination of the trauma in removing the catheter on 11/19, and the continued use of Prazosin (he’s been taking it for two weeks now). She said because the Prazosin relaxes the muscles of his urethra, it may be causing the dripping. Has anyone else heard something like this? I know it’s important for him to continue the Prazosin to avoid another blockage, but should I anticipate that my cat’s incontinence will get better once he goes off of it? It’s been consistent amounts of urine for the past couple of days. Thanks in advance!
