Well, as the title says, a co-worker of mine passed away and I've found myself taking in his dog. Earlier today, my boss and I decided to stop by his house after not being able to get in contact with him all week, bang on his door and eventually decided to call the police to perform a welfare check.. by the sound of it, his poor dog was in the home with him, deceased, since at least Wednesday evening.

Unfortunately, this coworker of mine lived in near squalor in a trailer style camper and doesnt have any relatives in the state. I was able to get a single pillow from inside to at least have his scent for the dog but am wondering if there's any other recommendations that can help this dog. I'm hoping to not end up being the forever home but am going to have the dog for at least a few days while I try and sort this out.. currently he terribly needs a bath and will probably need a vet trip to rein in some horribly long nails but otherwise has just been mopey and sleeping. Definitely happy to be out of there but is known to be a wound up, semi wild dog. He's had no training, terrible on a leash and has been living alone with my coworker his entire life.

It's currently about 11pm here and I'm finally almost home with him but would love any suggestions to try making this weekend a little easier on him and try to ensure my animals will be safe around him. He's met my female doberman before and gets along with her but I don't want to over stress him in his time of grieving.

Tonight's battles still include trying to bathe him and most likely kenneling him for the first time in his life. Long post shorter, I'm just hoping for any advice to survive this

EDIT: thank you everyone for all of your suggestions! He immediately had a bath last night and will probably have another by Monday. Been chipping away at his dirty ears and have made a vet appointment with his previous vet, that I managed to track down this morning. Found out he's current on rabies at least but the secretary didn't mention if he's had any other vaccinations. Thankfully I've managed to get in contact with my co-workers sister, who will be meeting me after the vet appointment on Monday to take him. I'll make sure to pass along any other pertinent tips to her as well.. I was hoping someone would take him but was willing to keep him if I had to. My dog and the newcomer have been getting along well and everything has been going far smoother than I was expecting last night. As far as I'm concerned, making sure his dog has a happy life is the least I could do for him.. thanks again everyone
