How reliable is fine needle aspiration for identifying mast cell tumors?
Post Body

Had a mass in my dog’s leg tested at the vet last month and they told us it was not cancerous but it’s looking worse now and like open wounds on it and I’m not sure the report is 100% reassuring … I already contacted the vet again for an appointment but wanted to get your opinion on whether the below lab report description sounds like they are not conclusive. Also no pics are allowed here but I posted a pic in another sub earlier if you want to look at it

“Interpretation: Keratinaceous debris

Comments: These findings could signify normal superficial keratinocytes or aspiration of a keratin producing lesion, such as a keratin inclusion cyst, trichiepithelioma, pilonatricoma, or a keratinizing acanthoma. If a more aggressive lesion is suspected or if there is a chance this sample may not be entirely representative of the clinical lesion, consider repeated cytologies or histologic evaluation.

Cytopathologic description: Smears examined contain scant keratinaceous debris, rare squamous epithelial cells, and few erythrocytes. Other tissue cells, inflammatory leukocytes, or microorganisms are not identified”
