Non-veterinarian here. Do you think there's an upper limit to how many pets it's reasonable to have? I have two cats now, and that's easily manageable. As time goes by, I might want to add more pets to my household, but I want to do it in a way that puts the interests of the animals, rather than my own wants, first. I understand that there are several factors--time, money, space, etc.--that go into someone's bandwidth for being a pet parent, but can any generalizations be made?
To illustrate a bit--when I was growing up, I knew a family that at any given time had two dogs, two cats, and at least one rabbit (sometimes two), in addition to four human children, in a moderately sized suburban house, on a middle-class income, with two working parents. At the time, I thought this was awesome, and I was jealous. Looking back, although I never saw any neglect, I'm ambivalent about whether it was awesome or crazy.
I'd love to hear thoughts from vets who work with animals all day and know tons of pet parents. Thank you.
