Species: horse Age: 13 Gender: male/gelding Breed: Thoroughbred Weight: ~1200 lbs My horse has been struggling with heaves for the past two years on and off (breathing heaving, sometimes coughing). It usually gets better in the winter and mid summer, but worse when the seasons change. This winter has been extremely bad for him, as the weather has been abnormally warm (located in the Midwest USA). He has been seen by two vets who believe it’s from allergies and he has been given steroid shots, hydroxyzine, clenbuterol, and Dexamethasone. In past years the steroid shots and a few days of clenbuterol at the beginning of a new season usually knock it out for the rest of that season, but this year it hasn’t worked well. When on clenbuterol or dexamethasone he breathes decently, but after the treatment ends he goes right back to being bad. Just wondering if anyone has any other treatment suggestions? Anything long term to give him? Should I try switching barns to see if it’s something in that environment? There are two other horses at the barn with the same issue.
