What causes dark stains when dog slobber dries?

Hi everyone, I’m currently fostering a 5-7yo Dane & I’ve noticed when his slobber dries, sometimes we get dark stains. What causes the staining? Is it something to be concerned about? I try to wipe his mouth with a towel as much as possible but he slobbers so much it’s impossible to catch all of it.
