Horse Having Hormonal and Urinary Issues
Post Body

Please note that I am posting here to hopefully get an idea or maybe even some peace of mind. My vet has been out (Wed) and I still have not heard back from her, and now I am waiting the weekend.

Name: Malmsey Age: 18 Breed: Arabian horse Sex: female Soreness started 2 weeks ago in hind legs and I had chiro out a week ago. Reproductive issues started 6 weeks ago, off an on. Urinary issues started 2 weeks ago but was subtle

First of all, she has been very stiff in her hind legs from stomping the ground aggressively from the flies. She has a fly sheet, gets sprayed 3 times a day and has fly boots. Our ground is just so very hard 😞 Lameness exam with the vet proved her stifles are sore. So she's on some bute to get any inflammation down and I am spending the money on Scoot Boots, which will cushion her hooves 24/7 and can be ridden in. Think of them as industrial sneakers. She also comes in 4-5 hours a day to be on bedding and get a break from the flies. My husband built our stalls and they are very large so the ponies can move around plenty. I am also doing ice boots daily.

The other thing is that she's been struggling to pee. Or that's what it seems to me. She will stretch out and try and then just stand there. When she does pee, she grunts a little. A few weeks ago, she had some major swelling of her "lady parts" and I thought it was from her being so messy when she uses the bathroom and having some build up, which I have been cleaning off a few days a week now. Malmsey is very shelfed.

My vet thought this could possibly be her stretching out in heat, but I have not noticed many signs of heat with Malmsey. She's already hot/energetic and some days more than others.

So the vet did some palpitations and then did an internal ultra sound into her bladder. Nothing super out of the ordinary except more mucus than normal. They also looked at her urinary tract.

Next the vet did a catheter and drained her bladder. She found sediment at the bottom of the bladder after a second internal ultrasound. 6 cm worth

After this, the vet used the ultra sound to look at her reproductive area and found that there are solid signs that 1) Malmsey was used as a broodmare and 2) She is going into heat way more than usual and her system is just very overactive right now. She has several follicles. Malmsey also has an enlarged...lady area.

Malmsey going into heat a lot could be because my gelding Voodoo is 3 and maturing. Even though he doesn't have balls (cut at 6 months).

The vet thinks Malmsey could be getting bacteria into her areas and to prevent this in the future, we would have to stitch up her lady area a bit. She thought she could have an infection of some sorts, but she had no fever.

But just to be sure, she took urine samples and blood samples and is having some specialists to take a look. Labs were submitted on Thursday but I still haven't heard back. I called today and didn't get a call back...I'm trying to tell myself "no news is good news, there are multiple eyes looking over everything, it could just take until Monday..."

I was really hoping for answers today. Now I have to sit on pins and needles all weekend, but I know if the results were urgent that my vet would have called me ASAP.

We also talked about using Progesterone to shut Malmseys system down for a bit and then take her off so that her system just gets a good restart.

If you read this far, thank you so very much (from ab extremely worried horse mom with panic attacks)
