My mini doxie, Haley, was 15. She was acting normal, she was eating and drinking and going to the bathroom fine. This morning at 4 she collapsed on her side and let out this awful whine. After that she had problems breathing. I took her to the EV and she had full blown congestive heart failure. Her heart was 3x the size and her lungs were full of fluid. How could I miss this? The vet said I could keep her in the hospital but she didn’t have a good chance and without treatment she would pass away in the next few hours. I decided to euthanize. Within a few hours of her collapsing she was dead. I just happened to be awake when it happened. Was she suffering this whole time and I didn’t see it? I feel awful.
