My dog (14 lb Chihuahua/terrier mix) has cancer. She’s been taking Prednisone 5 mg, Benadryl 25 (split in 12.5 doses), and Pepcid 10 mg (split in 5 mg doses) for several months.

My question is regarding the long-term side effects and efficacy of continued Benadryl use. I’m not sure what, if anything, it’s assisting with at this point.

Additionally, I’m curious regarding whether, given the Benadryl use if low dose Melatonin is advisable. I called the vet office and spoke to an individual who asked a doctor regarding the appropriate dose for my 14 lb dog. I was told 1 mg, and I did mention the Benadryl, but I’ve read conflicting things online.

Any thoughts? I realize of course that info shared here is not definitive advice, and it’s ultimately up to me and in consultation with my vet. I have an appointment scheduled for Friday.
