Pet ER says our young cat's lumbar spine is fractured & dislocated
Post Body

She came to the back door late last night, totally listless and apparently in excruciating pain.

ER doctor is surprised she shows no observable signs of neurological damage. They referred her to a neurologist. I'm transporting her there tomorrow.

Here are my priorities for taking care of this cat: - I choose death over suffering - no surgery - she's bonded with her sister, so if she needs to be euthanized I would like her to be home so they can be together

When I ask vets and techs about the decision to euthanize, they all reflexively tell me they can't help me make that decision. They say she's resting and they're keeping her comfortable and on a drip of pain meds and fluids and she has a catheter.

My questions: - is she already suffering? I can't see her so i have to rely on what the people employed by the service they're providing are telling me. She's on methadone - does this seem like an obviously grave injury? Should they more clearly present euthanasia as an option? Is there a tendency for emergency vets to wait for you to bring it up if it's pain rather than acute dying? - How can I get a sense if she has a shot at having a peaceful life if I take her home and keep her confined while she attempts recovery? She's not yet 2 years old. Her second birthday is next month.

I expect to get more info and direction from the neurologist tomorrow, but if anyone has insight that might help me prepare I'd be really grateful.
