How much money can you live off a month?

Hi all, I no longer live in the UK but I stupidly told an old friend of mine I’d try and help him find a new hole to rent as I have some free time without realising I’m totally out of touch about the cost of living in the UK right now. He’s a single dad with two young daughter (aged 6 and 4) and desperately wants a place with some outside space.

Apparently all in he gets around £35,000 a year with his job, child support payments from his ex-wife, and other benefits. He lives in outer south London which is where his job is and his family are so he can’t realistically move out of the city to find somewhere cheaper.

We’ve been having a back and forth about what his rent needs to be in terms of leaving him enough money to support him as his daughters. Any idea what someone in that position could live off after rent for a month roughly?

Thanks a lot in advance!
