What are the best cities for live shows?

Hey! I'm in the UK for two weeks, flying in today to London. After a few days there, my schedule is pretty open, so I thought I'd plan my trip around live music. What cities should I visit for live punk and rock shows? I'm also not averse to folk music.
Would love some suggestions. Thought of this course of action after finding out the pixies were playing in London the day before I leave... But tickets are obviously sold out!
