Okay, this is gonna sound a bit odd... but how do I go about finding out if my husband has divorced me or if he has died?*

We've had no contact for seven years and I have no way of finding him; I have tried, albeit halfheartedly.

I don't need a divorce but I'm trying to sort out various bits and pieces in my life and this is one of them.

I know I don't need his permission for a divorce, but if I save myself £500 of divorce fees because he's already done it, that would be quite nice.

*manic depressive alcoholic, could possibly have been institutionalised by now, had a huge 'self destruct' button; 'oh he will have divorced you by now' - well no, not really. For many years he refused because it would mean his current gf would insist upon them getting married and I was his convenient excuse. You'd have to be pretty dumb not to google that and find out that I can do nothing to stop a divorce given we've been apart for 12 years, but, you know, people..... :)
