Do you call /text those in your household when you're both at home?

My parents call each other sometimes and I don't understand why they do it.
Wouldn't it be better to talk in person?
My mother messages/calls me when she wants me and doesn't understand why I don't just answer her.
I tell her that I prefer human interaction.
