Married people of Reddit, is your spouse your friend?

My parents have been married for 40 years and I'm not sure if they are friends as they don't appear to have much or anything in common, they do go out sometimes but when they're at home they rarely spend time with each other.
They went on holiday twice last year but going on holiday with someone and enjoying someone's company doesn't mean they're your friend.
I don't understand how you could be married to someone and not seeing them as your friend.
Someone told me that as they've been married for so long their relationship is about companionship but I don't think I could do that, to be honest, it makes no sense to me.
