Is living without a car possible in a commuter/market town?

Post Body

Considering moving from West London to be a bit more out of the city, and wondering if this means that we will be practically required to get a car and be dependent on one - or, if it's possible to have a nice local life in such a town (Hitchin, St. Albans, something similar) relying only on public transport. One of us works from home, the other would still work from West London. One child in school.
What do you think? Is it possible or totally impractical?

Comments

Yeah, I think so. I work in London, but live down in Tunbridge Wells. I used to have a car, but not anymore, I so rarely used it. I do live within a short walk of the train station, shops and town centre though, if you don't then being car-free might be harder.
