I have been unemployed for a year as I have developed clinical depression and anxiety from my previous workplace. So, I can't really use the excuse "it was time for me to grow and explore other opportunities." I have had an interview recently and after I disclosed how toxic my boss and the environment was (I was asked this), I was met with "How can we be sure you're not the problem?"
To give you some context, my employer didn't allow colleagues to speak to one another (it was seen as gossiping) and I often had to work during holidays which I wasn't paid for. This just seems unreasonable.
My boss who earned 4 times as much as me for the same thing would scrutinize my work for mistakes which they would shame me for and would make me do whatever they didn't want to do for them. Is this normal?
How can I talk about these experiences without making it seem like I'm the problem or a walking negative-drain-you-vampire?
