What is the function of the washing machine door seal (the silicone part) and why water stays there (is that water dangerous)?

Today that water splashed on me and some clothes were more wet that others, I have ocd and I cannot stop thinking about it, is that water that stays there bad because it is a place that I don’t really clean I must admit.
