Elderly Technology: foolproof tech suggestions for older generations
Post Body

Any suggestions for tech solutions that are easy to use by the technologically illiterate? I'm trying to think of solutions to help simplify the life of my aging parents (and quite aged grandparents). I mean things that are difficult to accidentally deconfigure/delete/reset.

The specific issue that's on my mind right now is noise cancelling headphones. My grandparents are taking a very very long series of flights from Australia to visit us here in North America. We want to get them some headphones with good ANC. We were looking at Bose, Sony, Soundcore, Apple, Beats, etc. The real problem with all of them is some degree of configuration allowed. Neither of them like to have things shoved in their ears so inside earphones are a no go. Bose looks like it needs setup, same with Soundcore.

One of the issues is they still use iPod touches for music. Last time we were there we setup a foolproof system for them to rip their CDs and so they have grown accustomed to how to put music on them. They know how they work. They aren't going to change. If the iPods die before they do then I guess we're gonna have to show them Spotify, but then they'll have to learn to open apps and have phones and I can't even begin to imagine the difficulties these will cause. We're considering using their visit here to introduce them to iphones and spotify but that's a whole other discussion.

One game changer for us was switching to Apple devices has sort of increased the user-friendliness of the devices. My parents can now make calls to their grandchildren without difficulty and play games, interact. They're able to take photos and send them. Etc. A lot of straightforward stuff. Also fixing it is straightforward because there's less variability in how things are configured. The downside is of course cost, but a flight to Australia is prohibitive for IT services for your parents...

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on things that have improved their parents lives with technology, that are simple to use and maintain (even if they might have more complex setups).
