Shortly after the first 3 Ghostbusters lose their University gigs, Ray makes a comment to Peter:
"Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities; we didn't have to produce anything. You've never been out of college. I've worked in the private sector. They expect results."
So, what exactly was Ray up to in the outside world? Collectively the Ghostbusters show high aptitude in both mundane engineering and cutting-edge high-energy physics, with Ray in particular showing high mechanical aptitude. Was he a more conventional engineer before seeing that massive sponge migration shifted him on a different course?
