[Star Wars] How come Lightsabers collide with each other?

I understand that Lightsabers produce plasma and that plasma is contained by a force containment field. Plasma isn't solid, so how come lightsabers don't just pass through each other? Okay, so maybe it's the containment fields colliding. In that case, the containment field isn't going to put force on the hilt, so the blade should just... bend. How does it work?
