[I am Legend] How is New York still infested with Darkseekers after 3 years?

After KV broke out, 90% of Humanity was killed and 9.8% was mutated into Darkseekers. Here's the thing, how is NYC (and the rest of the world) still infested. The world not be able to support 600 million. Cities like New York would have no food left after a year. The Darkseekers population should have crashed to less than a few dozen in NYC within a couple of years.
Yes intelligent darkseekers existed but they are less common and most probably left the cities.
