[Fallout] Why is the while whole world so homogenous?

Between Fallout 1 and 4, we see what the post apocalypse looks like from California to Boston, but for some reason the flora and fauna are similar across the board. And geographically, it really doesn't make any sense. For example, scorpions in California, sure. Anywhere in the north east however, pretty much non-existent.
