[Planet of the Apes] Why are humans never acknowledged as being apes themselves?

Post Body

So I took my son to watch the new Planet of the Apes movie this weekend and we both loved it, it was a great movie. I decided to rewatch some of the other ones in the new series and something that kinda hit me was the fact that humans and apes are always explicitly distinguished between. Humans are, scientifically, classified as primates and members of the great apes. Is there any reason as to why they themselves are never acknowledged as apes?

With this in mind...wasn't the world already a Planet of the Apes?

Comments

Because humans aren't apes. That's an endemic misunderstanding of the literature.

Their divergence is almost as far up the treeas the divergence between cats and lions.
