An interesting side-note to this already excellent explanation is the impact of relativistic physics on particles as they travel through space.
Let me introduce you to the Oh My God Particle
While this wasn't an atom, per-se, it was a proton so a good demonstration of the principle that a particle travelling at a ludicrous speed will subjectively experience time-dilation. Such that mere weeks for the particle equate to practically the age of the universe. It's a fascinating concept that underlines just how fantastic our universe is especially at the extreme limits of the physical laws that govern it.
