Why did the light around the black hole photo appear more like a ring/disk and less like a spherical cloud or general glow?

Given that black holes are spherical and not really a 2D 'hole' don't they pull in light (and whatever else they may suck in) from all directions? So shouldn't the black hole have had more of a cloud than a ring or disk around it? Edit: Answered well
