Hi everyone,

We'll be visiting the Bay Area from San Diego in January. We're staying in Berkeley but will be visiting SF daily or near daily.

We have been up there many times and know how to use the public transit system pretty well, but now we are interested in saving money. So we will most likely be using buses more often than BART. I'm just having a little trouble understanding the transfer system and when discounts apply. Can anyone supply be with a simple breakdown? Or direct me to a website where I can find this info? I have been on the BART, Clipper Card and AC Transit websites but I am still a bit confused.

Or perhaps there is a website or app that compares fares and tells you the cheapest route?

edit: I found an app called cittymapper that compares fares, but I would still like to understand the system for myself.
